CELEBRATING KAAPS, READING & STORYTELLING! πŸ“š

CELEBRATING KAAPS, READING & STORYTELLING! πŸ“š On Tuesday, 22 September 2026, Balvenie Primary School had the pleasure of welcoming Mr Peter Daniels, an award-winning South African poet and author known as β€œPeeDee.”

Β

Mr Daniels was born and raised in a poverty-stricken community in Elsies River, Cape Town, a community that is also home to many of our learners. His journey makes his story especially relatable and inspiring to our school community, reminding us that where you come from does not determine where you can go. Through his writing and life experiences, he demonstrates that your voice can be heard, your dreams can become a reality, and you can make something meaningful of your life, regardless of your circumstances. His writing speaks to ordinary people navigating real-life challenges, offering hope through honest reflection and the assurance that God meets us deeply in our places of need.

Β

During his time at Balvenie Primary School, Mr Daniels shared his book, KAAPS MY TAL DJY STRAAL – i Digbindil in Ossi Tal, with our learners. His visit provided learners with an opportunity to listen, engage and learn more about his work, while celebrating the beauty, richness and uniqueness of Cape Town.

Β

The session also highlighted the importance of reading, writing and storytelling, as well as preserving and embracing our language, culture and heritage. Learners were encouraged to express themselves through words, to recognise the value of their own voices and stories, and to understand that their circumstances do not have to limit their dreams or their future.

Β

Balvenie Primary School would like to sincerely thank Mr Peter Daniels (PeeDee) for spending time with our learners and for inspiring them to develop a love for reading and writing, to express themselves creatively, and to take pride in their language, culture and stories.

Β

Keep reading. Keep writing. Keep telling your story! πŸ“šβœ¨
